Become an "armchair" caver by exploring caves in your own home!
First, you need to make a headlamp and flashlight.
Then, you're ready to go caving at-home!
Materials Needed to make a headlamp and flashlight:
|
| |
- 2 sheets of construction paper (yellow & color of your choice)
- 1 paper tube (toilet or paper towel tube)
- scissors
- ruler
- glue
|
| |
 |
Instructions:
- Using yellow construction paper cut out two circles that are 2 inches wide.
- Using a different color of construction paper, cut out 3 strips that are 12 inches long by 2 inches wide.
- Glue two of the strips together so they form a circle. This part will fit around your forehead.
- Lay the circle on its edge and glue the third strip across the circle to form an arch. This part will go across the top of your head.
- Next, take one of the yellow circles and glue it to the front of your paper headlamp.
- Take the other yellow circle and glue it to one of the openings on the paper tube. Now, you've made a flashlight.

Building and Exploring Caves in Your House
|
| |
Around your house there are many caves. Grab your headlamp and flashlight and let's go exploring!
The Kitchen Table:
To get into this cave, you'll have to squeeze through the tight opening under the chairs. Once you're through, look at the big room you've discovered.
Under the Bed:
Squeezing into this cave is not as tough as through the chairs, but look at all the cave wildlife... old dirty socks, huge dust bunnies and....what's that? Leftover pizza? Let's get out of here!
|
| |
So you think you've explored all the caves in your house? Let's build a new one!
|
| |
|
You can set out chairs in a row to make a tight crawl space, which leads into that big room under the table. You can use sheets and blankets to build another cave room. Big cardboard boxes are also great crawl spaces. Use your imagination; there are lots of unexplored caves out there!
