Educational Programs
(For students, Boy & Girl Scouts, and Groups)
 
All educational group programs include the American Cave Museum and the Hidden River Cave tour. Costs per person are based on the number of programs you choose. Base price is $4.00 per person. Please add $1.00 per person for each additional program.

Length of programs may vary according to group size. There is a 10-person minimum for all educational programs. Advance registration is required for all programs. Program areas, except for the Hidden River Cave Tour and Water Works, are handicap accessible.

Hidden River Cave Tour
(Included with all educational programs) Experience a cave firsthand while walking along a trail 150 feet below the ground inside Hidden River Cave. Along the way, we'll discuss how caves form, underground streams, cave wildlife, and the fascinating history of Hidden River Cave.

Elementary Cavers
This tour can be tailor made for younger visitors. Hands-on activities may include programs on cave animals, fossils, and a guided museum and cave tour.
Grades K - 3
Length: 45 minutes - 1 hour
 
Clues From the Past
Learn the basics of local cave archaeology by participating in simulated archaeological fieldwork. This hands-on program includes sifting, sorting, and graphing results.
Grades: 4 - 12
Length: 45 minutes to 1 hour
 
Fabulous Fossils
Learn about the ancient ocean that once covered much of North America and discover the creatures which lived in that ocean by looking at fossil remains. This program includes a hands-on fossil making activity.
Grades: 3 - 8
Length: 45 minutes to 1 hour
 
Karst Geology
This program starts with a hands-on introduction to geology. Participants then learn about the five features of a karst landscape and how those features affect water flow and water quality.
Grades: 4 & above
Length: 45 minutes to 1 hour
 
Secret Sink
Participants role-play various community leaders and decision makers while they build a modern day community on a karst landscape. Environmental issues they must deal with include nonpoint source pollution and sinkhole dumping.

Water Works
Discuss the water cycle, how it operates in a karst landscape, and conduct hands-on water quality monitoring activities in the Hidden River.

Caving Adventure Tour
(formerly our EcoTour)
The Hidden River Cave Adventure Tour takes you 150 feet below ground into the depths of Hidden River Cave to explore off the beaten path! Cave explorers get a chance to view an underground river system, cave formations, and elusive cave wildlife. This tour is designed to provide a rare look into the fragile cave ecosystem of Hidden River Cave and to teach the importance of cave conservation.
Ages: 12 & above
2 hours: $25 per person
3 hours: $35 per person
 
Cave and Karst Field Tour
Provides an in-depth look at the karst landscape of south central Kentucky. We'll start with an introduction to karst geology and the landscape features that define karst. Then we'll hit the road to identify and discuss those karst landscape features. There will be several stops during the field tour. Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes. Available for groups of 10 or more. We are proud to announce our new scout program. The American Cave Museum and Hidden River Cave invites Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to discover the wonderful, fragile world of caves. We offer six different opportunities for scouts to fulfill all or partial badge requirements:
